How do I use the mapping application?
Use the help that is included in the
application (Help >> Website Help), or the
Crime Incident Mapping System User's Guide
.
Experiment - the more you use the application, the more familiar it will
become.
When is the data in the mapping
application updated?
Updates to Street Centerlines and
Municipal Boundaries occur twice a month. Crime Incident data are update once a
month.
What if I find something wrong with
the data in the mapping application?
Problems with any data or information
should be brought to the attention of the appropriate department. A link to
Contact Us is located at the bottom of the page. In general,
Crime Incident information should be directed to the Greenville County
Sheriff's Office. Geographic data and web site questions should be directed to
the Greenville County GIS Division.
What Coordinate System is the data in?
Coordinate System: South
Carolina State Plane
Map Projection: Lambert Conformal Conic
Horizontal Datum: NAD83 (2001)
Vertical Datum: NAVD 1988
Units: International Feet (1 Foot = 0.3048 Meters)
How do I create a direct link to the
mapping application?
Click on "Favorites" in
the Web Browser's tool bar and choose "Add to Favorites...".
Nothing happens when I press Preview
and Print to create a printer-friendly window. What should I do?
Certain pages within the application
are created in pop-up windows. If a pop-up blocker is activated in the web
browser these windows cannot be created. Disable any pop-up blockers other than
the Google pop-up blocker. The application has only been tested to work with
the Google pop-up blocker.
How do I zoom in / out and move around
the map?

To zoom in, choose the zoom in tool
in the Map Toolbar. On the map, click the left mouse button once and hold it
down. Drag the mouse to draw a box completely around the area of interest.
Release the left mouse button. The map will redisplay at the extent of the area
contained within the box.

To zoom out, choose the zoom out tool
in the Map Toolbar. On the map, click the left mouse button once and hold it
down. Drag the mouse to draw a box. Release the left mouse button and the map
will redisplay at a larger area of interest at a smaller scale.

To move around the map without zooming in or out, choose the pan tool
in the Map Toolbar.
Click the left mouse button once and drag the mouse in the direction you want
to move the map.

I was looking at what I wanted, but
then moved the map. How do I get back to what I was viewing?
Use the zoom to previous extent
tool in
the Map Toolbar. Once clicked, the map will redisplay at the previous view.
Alternatively, you may use the My Maps tool in the Main
Toolbar, to view and set previous extents. Click the My Maps text
in the application. Previous views will be shown. Hover over an image to
display that view. Left click the image once to make that view permanent.
How do I locate a street by name only?
Under the Tools pull
down menu, select Find Addresses and enter a street name.
How do I print information contained
within the mapping application?
Maps within the mapping application
can be printed by using the print
tool in the Map Toolbar or (File >> Print). A form will display to the
left of the map. If you would like to print the map, click on the Preview &
Print button. Options such as a legend, location map, and feature information
can be printed on the map by checking the box next to the object. See the

Why does the map not display?
Be patient, especially if the internet
connection uses a phone modem. Large amounts of data are being processed each
time a request is sent. It takes some time for the request to be processed and
sent to your computer, particularly during times of heavy use.
