How do I use the mapping application?
Use the help that is included in the application (Help >> Website Help), or the Internet Mapping System User's Guide . Experiment - the more you use the application, the more familiar it will become.

When is the data in the mapping application updated?
Updates to Real Estate Tax Parcels, Street Centerlines, Tax Districts, Zoning, and Municipal Boundaries occur twice a month. Ownership, Legal References, and other descriptive data are updated daily. Black and White Aerial Photography was current as of March 1997, and the color Aerial Photography was current as of March 2003.

What if I find something wrong with the data in the mapping application?
Problems with any data or information should be brought to the attention of the appropriate department. A link to Contact Us is located at the bottom of the page. In general, zoning questions should be directed to the Greenville County Planning Commission. Property questions should be directed to Greenville County Real Property Services. Geographic data and web site questions should be directed to the Greenville County GIS Division.

Is the Zoning information in the mapping application the Official Zoning Map?
Zoning information included in the mapping application is for reference purposes only. The Planning Commission should be contacted to verify the zoning for a particular property.

The parcel I am interested in lies within the GSP Airport Environs Area, what does that mean?
The GSP Airport Environs Area is an area surrounding the airport containing special land use restrictions. To find out more information about the GSP Airport Environs Area, make sure the Environs Area is visible and use the identify tool to display information and links about the Environs Area.

What Coordinate System is the data in?
Coordinate System: South Carolina State Plane
Map Projection: Lambert Conformal Conic
Horizontal Datum: NAD83 (2001)
Vertical Datum: NAVD 1988
Units: International Feet (1 Foot = 0.3048 Meters)

How do I create a direct link to the mapping application?
Click on "Favorites" in the Web Browser's tool bar and choose "Add to Favorites...".

Can the data within the mapping application be purchased?
Yes, GIS base data and aerial photography can be purchased. See the Data Access / Data Distribution page.

Nothing happens when I press Preview and Print to create a printer-friendly window. What should I do?
Certain pages within the application are created in pop-up windows. If a pop-up blocker is activated in the web browser these windows cannot be created. Disable any pop-up blockers other than the Google pop-up blocker. The application has only been tested to work with the Google pop-up blocker.

How do I find out what the Zoning for a property is?
Click on the Layers tab in the Main Toolbar. Check the box next to Zoning and click the refresh map button. The map will redisplay with zoning visible.
Note: Zoning in Greenville County differs between the County and different Municipalities. To find out what the zoning classification means for the parcel or area you are viewing, click the Zoning Classifications link at the bottom of the mapping application.
Example: C-1 does not mean the same thing in the County as it does in the City of Fountain Inn.

How do I zoom in / out and move around the map?

I was looking at what I wanted, but then moved the map. How do I get back to what I was viewing?
Use the zoom to previous extent tool in the Map Toolbar. Once clicked, the map will redisplay at the previous view. Alternatively, you may use the My Maps tool in the Main Toolbar, to view and set previous extents. Click the My Maps text in the application. Previous views will be shown. Hover over an image to display that view. Left click the image once to make that view permanent.

How do I measure areas like the size of my roof for new shingles or the size of my backyard?
Zoom in close to the area to be measured. Select the measure tool in the Map Toolbar. On the map, single click points on the map around the area to be measured, and double click to clear the measure values. See the Internet Mapping System User's Guide for more details.

How do I locate a street by name only?
Under the Tools pull down menu, select Find Addresses and enter a street name.

How do I print information contained within the mapping application?
Maps within the mapping application can be printed by using the print tool in the Map Toolbar or (File >> Print). A form will display to the left of the map. If you would like to print the map, click on the Preview & Print button. Options such as a legend, location map, and feature information can be printed on the map by checking the box next to the object. See the Internet Mapping System User's Guide for more details.

Why does the map not display?
Be patient, especially if the internet connection uses a phone modem. Large amounts of data are being processed each time a request is sent. It takes some time for the request to be processed and sent to your computer, particularly during times of heavy use.
